Atomic force microscopy on fibers

چکیده
Natural and synthetic fibers exhibit a huge diversity regarding their dimension, structure and physical-chemical properties. The wanted properties of textiles are adjusted by directed selection, development and processing of fiber material. Atomic force microscopy offers as sole method the possibility to acquire quantitative information in the nanoand micro range under environmental conditions about the surface properties of fibers and textiles. Therefore is the application of atomic force microscopy for the characterisation of fibers regarding their topography, material distribution, wettability, elastic properties and for the evaluation of manufacturingand modification processes invaluable. In order to underline this fact the state of the art of atomic force microscopy on fibers is shown, different operational modes are introduced, techniques of sample preparation are presented and the significance of atomic force microscopy is demonstrated with numerous examples of subsequently mentioned manufacturing and surface modification techniques: plasmatechnology, chemical vapour deposition, melt-spinning of bicomponent fibers, wetchemistry, microstructuring, compounding.

Atomic Force Microscopy Application in Biological Research: A Review Study
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a three-dimensional topographic technique with a high atomic resolution to measure surface roughness. AFM is a kind of scanning probe microscope, and its near-field technique is based on the interaction between a sharp tip and the atoms of the sample surface. There are several methods and many ways to modify the tip of the AFM to investigate surface properties, ...

In this paper, a simple and reproducible approach for attaching the multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to the apex of the atomic force microscope probe has been proposed. For this purpose, the dielectrophoresis method was applied due to its simple performance, cheapness and reliability. In this method, various parameters such as voltage, frequency, concentration of carbon nanotubes solution an...
متن کاملVisualization and mechanical manipulations of individual fibrin fibers suggest that fiber cross section has fractal dimension 1.3.
We report protocols and techniques to image and mechanically manipulate individual fibrin fibers, which are key structural components of blood clots. Using atomic force microscopy-based lateral force manipulations we determined the rupture force, FR, f fibrin fibers as a function of their diameter, D, in ambient conditions. As expected, the rupture force increases with increasing diameter; howe...
متن کاملAtomic force microscopy of height fluctuations of fibroblast cells.
We investigated the nanometer scale height fluctuations of 3T3 fibroblast cells with the atomic force microscope under physiological conditions. A correlation between these fluctuations and lateral cellular motility can be observed. Fluctuations measured on leading edges appear to be predominantly related to actin polymerization-depolymerization processes. We found fast (5 Hz) pulsatory behavio...
متن کاملEffect of thermo-mechanical refining pressure on the properties of wood fibers as measured by nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy
Refined wood fibers of a 54-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) mature wood were investigated by nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The effect of steam pressure, in the range of 2–18 bar, during thermomechanical refining was investigated and the nanomechanical properties and nanoor micro-level damages of the cell wall were evaluated. The results indicate that refining pressu...
